100 days to deliver a TrafoSiteRepairTM in Brazil - Certainly

Following an unexpected failure on one of their critical GSU transformers rated 110/140MVA; Veracel did not have any available spare transformer to replace the failed transformer and turned to ABB Brazil for support.

Veracel contacted ABB Brazil Service team for diagnosis testing and investigation hoping for a potential quick and shortest solution. The field diagnostics testing carried out by ABB service technicians confirmed that the transformer windings had failed and a rewind was necessary in order to repair the transformer. Based on the field test results, the biggest concern for the customer was a secure and quick recovery plan in order to resume production as soon as possible.

It was presented to the customer the benefits a TrafositeRepairTM would give in this case. ABB offered and agreed to complete the project in 110 days agreeing on liquidated damages for any project delay and performance based bonus for any project schedule improvement.

The TrafositeRepairTM was performed at Veracel Celulose SA facility. The TrafoSiteRepairTM skilled team, equipment and tools were delivered on site to execute the project. The agreed scope of work included a complete active part disassembly, service core assembly, new windings, active part assembly, new cable support structure, on site drying, service all transformer external accessories, oil filling and agreed test plan for dielectric and power testing. All the above tasks were completed as agreed.

After successful acceptance of all testing, the transformer was available to Veracel for service support 10 days ahead of the originally agreed schedule. It is important to mention here that ABB Brazil’s engineering team was able to update the existing design of the transformer to present standards based on current requirements showing how ABB was able to add value to the customer needs by offering both options and providing a better solution for the customer. A win-win situation for both ABB and the customer

Veracel is a partnership between two leading companies of the international pulp and paper sector — Fibria of Brazil and Stora Enso of Sweden-Finland, located in the Northeast region of Brazil, about 1600 km’s away from the ABB Brazil Guarulhos factory.
